The Uphill Climb For Upper Cervical

by Brandon Harshe, DC on October 27, 2009

uphill climb(Editor’s note: This is a guest post by Dr. Moses Bernard.)

As students, I know a lot of us see that anytime we bring up Upper Cervical, we are going to be met with violent opposition and as a result we stay too quiet.  We need to be the ones to remind other students, faculty and the world that chiropractors ARE a separate and distinct branch of health care.  We aren’t physiotherapists, athletic trainers, masseuses, sports physicians, nutritionists, or medical doctors.   The art of chiropractic doesn’t involve taping ankles, stretching hamstrings, or popping people where it hurts.

If we cease to be separate and distinct, we cease to exist; people went to jail for it to be so.  And from what I see, the Upper Cervical movement seems to be the only one holding on to this separate and distinct reality.

For the last few months of my academic career, I was working on campus at Parker’s school library.  Last week, we worked on a project to shift all the books to different shelves.  As a result, I saw the title of almost every book in our library.  As I went through the shelves I found many ‘alternative’ ways towards health and to fight chronic disease, some dating to the early 60’s.  And whether written in those books, or being spouted by wellness gurus today, the ideas aren’t new.  This is nothing ‘trendy’ or ‘contemporary’.  The ONLY way to be healthy or fight disease is making your body work correctly.  Give it enough of what it needs: proper nerve supply, nutrition, rest and exercise.  Get rid of the crap it doesn’t: sedentary lifestyles, garbage ‘foods’, vaccines and other pills, potions and lotions, and your body has NO CHOICE but to be well.  The named medical condition or ICD-9 code is irrelevant to the properly functioning masterpiece that is the human body.

Upper cervical soldiers, we have a big war ahead of us.  Holding your tongue to stay away from often heated but always necessary debates isn’t helping us.  Get out there, spread the word furiously, get people well, and don’t be afraid to make some enemies in the process.

We have a LOT of work to do.
