Conveying Tone of Voice, Lack of Writing Know-How, and All Your Base are Belong to Us

by Brandon Harshe, DC on January 29, 2010

all your base are belong to us, shockedOne of the biggest problems with blogging is that your tone can’t be taken into consideration. People read what you write and if they don’t like it, they automatically think you’re attacking them. Take the same statement in a real conversation, and the person is much less likely to get offended because of how you say it.

Sometimes conveying tone can get lost in a person’s poor writing skills as well. Translating what they are thinking into the written, or typed, word doesn’t pan out and readers might get offended. It’s amazing what a mess a missing pronoun here or there or incorrect sentence syntax can create.

In the spirit of these two problems, I thought I would post a very funny video. This is a cut scene from a video game called “Zero Wing.” This has to be one of the most poorly translated Japanese-to-American video games ever. Enjoy!
