I am going to assume that everyone reading this has classified themselves as a liberal or a conservative, be it staunch or moderate. We all have our different views on politics and that’s fine. What I am going to do today is talk about health care in a different light.
When we hear the term liberal we think of someone with left of center beliefs such as nationalized health care, gun control, increased taxes, etc.
When we hear conservative, we think of someone with right of center beliefs such as personal responsibility, limited government, lower taxes, etc.
But these classifications don’t have much to do within health care. Liberal and conservative take on completely different meanings when it pertains to someone’s health.
What is liberal and what is conservative health care?
Many in our society still think chiropractors are kooky and weird, that we are something akin to witch doctors. What is considered a drug free (not in New Mexico) and non-invasive way to help people is thought of as being non-scientific, that only a liberal nut would get into something like chiropractic.
However, modern medicine i.e. prescription drugs, surgery, and many other invasive treatments are considered to be normal, even recommended. I have heard numerous conservative talk show hosts touting the authority of modern medicine when it comes to all things health-related, despite the lack of sense basic research could correct (see anything swine flu related).
I am hear to clear the air that Upper Cervical Chiropractic is as conservative a form of health care as you can find. First off, Upper Cervical Chiropractors do not adjust their patients every visit. In fact, it’s common to hear of an Upper Cervical Chiropractor adjusting someone as little as 3-6 times in a single year.
The reason is that Upper Cervical Chiropractors are very specific in their practice and use different forms of analysis to determine when and when not to adjust a person.
Also, Upper Cervical Chiropractors are very specific on where and how to adjust. This is done via x-rays of the upper cervical spine.
Having the knowledge of where, how, and when to adjust is very powerful in the course of a patient’s care. In fact, there is a saying that “holding is healing.” This means that if you do not need an adjustment, you are holding your previous adjustment. When your body holds your adjustment, this means you do not have an upper cervical subluxation. This means your body has complete communication between the nervous system and the body, allowing proper healing to take place.
Money, money, money
Using drugs, surgery, and invasive treatments for simple things like common colds and headaches is a very liberal approach to health care. One definition of liberal is “given freely or abundantly; generous.” Modern medicine has no problem giving freely and abundantly, simply because it lines the pockets and coffers of the companies giving freely and abundantly.
Spinal fusion surgery as a treatment for back pain is not conservative. Snipping the trigeminal nerve to treat trigeminal neuralgia is not conservative. Putting rods alongside a person’s spine to treat scoliosis is not conservative. Those aren’t even sensible, unless ruining someone’s life and beginning the avalanche of declining health is the agenda.
