How Chiropractic Changes the Way We View “Sickness”

by January Harshe on March 19, 2010

healthy kids, nervous system interference, upper cervical chiropracticMy children and I are checked for nerve interference on a regular basis.  It gives me confidence because I know that our bodies are living at their optimal level of health. I know our brains are properly communicating with our bodies and I know my children’s immune systems are functioning at super hero level!

When someone in my family does get sick, I am happy about it.  That is right, I am totally OK when my kids get sick.  Why? Because I know their bodies need a chance to fight off viruses and bacteria, so they can become even healthier!  Brandon will check them for nerve interference (also referred to as vertebral subluxation) and if it is found, it’s removed via an Upper Cervical adjustment.

I can not tell you how amazing it is as a parent to have the comfort knowing my kids can heal on their own with NO DRUGS WHATSOEVER! They also are able to listen to their bodies because we are not putting anything in them to alter the brain/body messages.  Our oldest, for example, is six years old.  She is very in tune with her body at this point.  She will come to us and say, “I need to be checked, I think I am subluxated.”  She is usually right!  When they are healing, they do what feels right.  They sleep, eat, cough, etc based on how and when their bodies are telling them to.

Let me give you a real life example of how this works in our home. Recently, our oldest wasn’t feeling well.  She had a fever and was feeling lethargic (or in the past it was that her ears were hurting).  I DO NOT NEED TO DIAGNOSE her or have an MD diagnose her.  Whatever it is, I know her body is doing its job.  She was checked for nerve interferences and when it was found, she was adjusted at C1 and rested after (she complains this is the boring part about chiropractic).

prescription drugs, the atlas of lifeAfter the adjustment, her body wanted to rest, so she slept all day.  I didn’t force her to drink or eat. I knew that her body and brain were communicating perfectly.  She woke up at some point and asked for water, then went back to sleep.  She repeated this as needed.  Her fever may have gone up or down (I don’t usually check or use a thermometer), depending on what HER BODY NEEDS.  Who am I to say her fever needs to go down?  How can I know that?  Only her body knows.  By day two (and maybe another adjustment), she was running around and playing.  No drugs, no interference.

This is ‘normal’ to us.  Chiropractic is CONFIDENCE and COMFORT for a parent.  I wouldn’t have it any other way.  We are very blessed that our children have been checked and adjusted by a chiropractor SINCE BIRTH!

Chiropractic has kept our family healthy too! When I see my family getting sick, or they call me, like just the other day, to see how we are doing because they are all sick and wanted to make sure we were well. We are always well! Like January said, even when we do get sick, it is a GREAT thing, so our perspective about being sick is not a negative one to begin with, but we also are not sick long! We eat a healthy whole food diet in our house, unlike the rest of my family, and we are all checked for nervous system interference on a regular basis, and that interference removed if found, and our bodies’ immune systems are functioning optimally because of this. So we are not sick long, our bodies are able to heal and recover very quickly! I find this so amazing and fantastic, and part of the results of living a healthy lifestyle and being conscious of the effects our lifestyle choices have on our health and making the health enhancing choices as often as possible! :)

Thank you for a fantastic post!

Brandon was right about you, January. Great post! Keep the fire burning! I don’t even like using the term sick when our kids do not feel well because sickness is the opposite of healthy. So if they are free of interference and functioning as they should then they are healthy even if they do not feel well. Of course if they are in need of an adjustment then I would say that they were sick. Hope that makes sense.
