Is Chiropractic “Wellness” or is Wellness “Chiropractic?”

by Brandon Harshe, DC on June 10, 2010

When I was is school, there was a lot of talk that chiropractic is wellness, that wellness is chiropractic, that they are one in the same. The concept of wellness is a good one, but it is not chiropractic per sé. Chiropractic involves restoring 100% function between the nervous system and body via a specific adjustment. Wellness tends to be an overall healthy state of being that includes chiropractic, but is not chiropractic itself.

Recently, I asked the question on Facebook: “Are wellness and chiropractic one and the same, or are they different?” Here are some other thoughts on this topic besides mine.

What are your thoughts? Are they the same or different?

Both chiropractic and wellness are terms that mean different things to different people. That being said, I follow Dr. B.J. Palmer and he certainly has a specific definition for chiropractic and a specific philosophy for living life. What we as a profession have not done is to embrace all of B.J. Palmer chiropractic. B.J. described a way to connect with the higher Intelligence or God by asking the question and letting the higher Intelligence give us the answers. So, if you want to know what you should eat or what you should do to become healthier, go within. This concept is much the opposite of the wellness movement that wants to dictate from the outside in on how to be well. I know it is scary for some to hear the word God, but B.J. Palmer said “Innate is God in man.” Whatever word you use, just insert it in there. We can get our answers through revelation(giant) and be better off than if we try to derive information through the intellect(pigmy). This is the next step in the evolution of consciousness and the next step in chiropractic and wellness.
