Statements on CCE Proposed Standards by 2 Chiropractic College Presidents

by Brandon Harshe, DC on September 20, 2010

Friday, Dr. Fabrizio Mancini and Dr. Guy Riekeman, presidents of Parker and Life, respectively, came out with their own statements on the CCE proposed standards on Facebook, as did Parker College itself.

Dr. Fabrizio Mancini

“Thank you all for your input! It’s wonderful to see such passion from the profession and see important issues being debated.

From time to time, the CCE reviews its standards. They put together a draft of their suggestions for changes and make it available to all the profession to give input. Our team has spent a tremen…dous amount of time looking at the proposed changes and has noticed some good suggestions, but at the same time, we have some concerns that we are addressing.

Everyone – colleges, associations, and you! – can give input until September 24. The draft is available to everyone to read, so please read it and give your input ASAP. Here is the website where you can read draft and also where you can send comments: www.cce-usa.org.”

Later, Parker College of Chiropractic released its official statement about the CCE proposed changes via Dr. Mancini’s Facebook page:

“Parker College of Chiropractic recognizes the important role of the Council on Chiropractic Education and the contributions they have made to the profession. The most recent proposals have created a wave of opinions and apparent dissatisfaction.

The position of Parker College of Chiropractic regarding the chiropractic health care paradigm has not changed. We are in the process of preparing a formal response to the CCE proposed changes, which include:

1) Subluxation has been and should continue to be the cornerstone of chiropractic. We object to the removal of this foundational word from chiropractic’s lexicon.

2) Doctor of chiropractic programs (DCPs) graduate doctors of chiropractic, and this designation must be maintained. We are not in favor of changing the nomenclature to “doctor of chiropractic medicine” or any such nomenclature.

3) We stand for and support the chiropractic paradigm of natural health without the use of drugs and surgery. We understand that at some point in the future vitamins, minerals, and other natural compounds may be viewed by governing agencies as drugs, and we do want to preserve the right of chiropractors to recommend such natural compounds to their patients. If a change in definition is required to preserve this right, Parker is willing to consider alternate definitions.

CCE is taking feedback until September 24. Give your input in the form found at www.cce-usa.org. Let’s stand up and be heard!”

Dr. Guy Riekeman

“Life University, along with Life College of Chiropractic West, Sherman College of Chiropractic and Cleveland Chiropractic College, will be making a joint statement next week regarding the Council on Chiropractic Education’s (CCE’s) proposed new standards for chiropractic education. The announcement will reiterate the original purpose of the revision of the CCE’s Standards, and make a statement concerning how the final draft proposal compared to the original charge given to the Task Force who have been working on the draft for the profession.

However, until that joint statement is made by the four institutions, we feel it is necessary to emphasize Life University’s position on certain points.  The mission of the College of Chiropractic at Life University is, and will always be, centered on correction of the vertebral subluxation complex, and to educate and mentor our students to become skilled Doctors of Chiropractic.  The Life education is based on a vitalistic philosophy, and we do not, and will not, teach our students to utilize drugs, radiation or surgery as part of the chiropractic delivery of care.

It is promising to see so many students and Doctors of Chiropractic exude such unity in their passion and discussion about the CCE’s proposed changes.  Thanks for your commitment, and please look for our official statement next week.”
